After earning a BA in education and science from Hope College in 1964, Thomas Van Dyke worked as a secondary school teacher and administrator for 17 years. He earned an MA in educational administration from Michigan State University along the way. He also served as a pastor and assistant pastor in three churches for 40 years. He is retired but still works as a volunteer chaplain in adult care facilities and writes as time permits.
